President Obama recently announced an aid package of more than $130 million to fight the narcotraficantes (narco-traffickers) in Central and Latin America. The infusion of money was announced at the Summit of the Americas in April in Cartagena, Colombia, to head off criticism of the “war on drugs”—and spreading calls to declare it a failure and end it.

The White House wants the world to believe drug prohibition works, and to forget the murderous legacy of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Central and Latin America.

The CIA and the DEA have been directly involved in drug trafficking in the region for decades. They’ve trained, armed and funded death squads and right-wing paramilitary groups that share control of the lucrative drug trade. Corrupt officials at the highest levels of government and sections of the business class also profit enormously from the illicit drug trade.

Latin America has borne the brunt of the U.S.-led war on drugs that has turned several countries into virtual war zones full of massacres and mayhem. Drug cartels operate with near impunity and assassinate judges, journalists, mayors, police and anyone unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

No country wants to become the “next Mexico,” where more than 60,000 people have died in gruesome, drug-fueled violence. Over 250,000 have been internally displaced, and kidnapping for ransom is rife. In many parts of Mexico, drug cartels now battle openly with government forces for control of cities and towns.

The effects on the Mexican economy, in particular tourism, have been devastating. In Acapulco last year, 15 decapitated bodies were found on a walkway to a popular beach. Another 12 victims, including two police officers, were killed in the city on the same day. The drug war has turned Mexico into vast killing fields and economic wastelands.

Update on why I’m still going to Hell

I come from a devout vaguely Christian family (I say vaguely because they mix shit up between catholic and protestant all the time) that takes the practice of tithing very seriously. Problem is we just kinda got out of the habit of going to church, so all we got left with was the zeal without the weekly boredom. My brother though, has the guiltiest conscious on earth. When I say this I mean he will beat himself up about missing his religious ceremonies and any perceived sacrilege to a degree I find a bit silly. So because of this guilt he kept on tithing, and not the suggested ten percent but just huge chunks of whatever he felt sad enough to give. Tens, twenties, fives, it was ridiculous. He had this pile of cash sitting in a stein waiting for church where he would presumably unload it all into the collection plate at once for the fun of making the rest of the congregation feel completely upstaged. I would snipe just enough money from the stein to go unnoticed, going for fives underneath the top layer to leave it looking undisturbed. I resented that I was going hungry on campus everyday and he was sitting on a fat stack of cash reserved for some asshole Texas preacher who would only make it rain on his coke dusted prostitutes.

I decided to take action. I came up to him with all his money in a ziploc and said “John they just opened up a disaster relief charity on campus! (This was 2011 we had disasters aplenty) They need money.”

“But that money’s for Church though!”

“Do you think Jesus would want you to help a local pastor get a new lexus or help people who don’t have any running water anymore because of disasters?”

“But..ok”

And so I charged out the door with a sack full of money in my backpack and a smile on my face. Today I shall eat! Not even slightly guilty. I ate well that day on my stack of looted cash. And drank. I ended up giving most of it to a friend who couldn’t afford groceries that month but I like to think it’s the blasphemous thought that counts here. If his God exists I basically stole money from his kid so I don’t think he’ll be entirely pleasant about it.
